Unit 10
Contemporary America
Timeline
Defense of Marriage ActIt is a short summary of the act which states that marriage is to be between a man and a woman and even provides the definition of what a marriage is so that it may be politically correct.
It is significant because it shows what the mindset of the people living during this time was like. It shows that they had very high traditional values for what a marriage should be. It also shows interference between the church and the state. This also gave back some power to the states so that each state could decide how they would want to react to the act and whether or not they agreed with it. With controversy over AIDS or the "Gay Disease" this act was widely argued over. Alexis S. |
