Rules for Husbands and Wives - Mathew Carey
This is a set of rules regarding what is acceptable for a husband and a wife to partake in. It also exemplified the restraint of women in society and in their homes. During these times, if a marriage was not strong, then a family was not strong, and if the family was not strong then the children would become corrupt and ruin the balanced society.
This document is important because it illustrates the expectations of women and men during this time period. It exemplifies how women were expected to succumb to their husbands and had next to no rights. Women were not allowed to partake in certain activities so that they may not disrupt or anger their husbands. These rules shoe how women were expected to care for the house, their families and get their work done. These rules show the superiority of the male in a relationship, were even if he does something wrong it is ultimately the woman's fault. Rules like these would lead to activism among the women.

The Effects of Intemperance, 1839
This is a picture depicting a scene where a drunken father comes home in a rage. The room is in disarray, and he is about to throw a stool at his wife and children and possibly step on his baby, all while holding a bottle.
This is the main point of the Temperance Society where they are arguing that 'demon rum' only causes "misery and wretchedness". It illustrates how it literally destroys the home and hurts the women and children, and what will happen if it isn't stopped. Since it was the women that had to deal with the negative, abusive effects of alcohol, they, of course, would be the one propagating the Temperance movement.

The Indian Removal Act 1830This document is the Act regarding the "relocation" of the Indian tribes in what was then the United States to west of the Mississippi river. it was created by the Congress and executed by Andrew Jackson who was president at that moment .
This document shows the cruelty and injustice brought upon the Indian tribes by Jackson's presidency. It also led into the Trail of tears that not only Jackson coordinated but annihilated thousands of Indians on their way to the west of Mississippi. This was the first of many acts and events that would not go in the indian's favor. Verick R. |
